Time Attack: Cadwell's mixed bag

We caught up with Team Milltek GT-R's driver Richard Marshall for his thoughts on the first event of the season held at Cadwell Park on the 5th May.

RM: Before leaving Nottingham on Friday Ben from GTC Racing asked me to do a log on the car. Unfortunately we found that the injector cycle had risen to unacceptable levels. With no time left we headed for Cadwell Park and Severn Valley Motorsport dispatched their chief GTR technician John to drive from Telford to Cadwell Park to possibly change the injectors and fuel pumps.

John turned up a 7:30pm and worked until 11:30pm and although he didn’t find a definitive fault – several parts were showing signs of fatigue..

Saturday morning brought a brighter though colder day and the first practise went without too much incident with the tyres scrubbed in and temps set we were all but ready for qualifying – unfortunately the weather had a different opinion and with the heavens opening the next session was declared a wet race and although we thought the Toyo tyres would quickly get up to temp they struggled through the session and a valuable lesson was learned – too much pressure can be let out quickly – too little pressure takes far too long to change.

Qualifying started well but the problem was to find a clear lap to get a fast lap time set.. With so many cars on track at the same time you need to drop back enough so you don’t catch the car in front but not enough for the car behind to overtake you.. Unfortunately I didn’t get a full clear lap and for this the time showed..

In the final the track was beautifully dry and the tyre grip was at its best for the day.

A couple laps in and with the tyres up to temp I got to set a fast lap but the clutch temp warning light came on and I had to do two slower laps to get the temps back down – on a 15 minute session this meant that I had one chance for a flying lap..

From the start / finish line up to the first sector stage the car was flying – with a top speed of 148 mph – 10 mph faster than our rivals best.. However a bad oil leak was sending oil onto the front and rear passenger side wheel, meaning traction was poor.. Entering the mountain section I was over a second up on my best lap but came up behind the Audi S2 which was being shown waved blue flags but was unable to get out of the way in time and the time was ruined.

So 4th place was the best we could manage on a track which we knew would not favour the big wide heavy GTR but were very content with the points overall.

Don't miss Round 2 of the Time Attack series featuring the Team Milltek GT-R at Knockhill on the 10th June.

Nissan Juke 1.6 DIG-T in development

Milltek exploded onto the Nissan tuning scene back in 2009 when it launched its infamous Y-Pipe for brand new R35 GT-R. Sales of the Y-Pipe, and later, with the launch of their Road and Race 90mm exhaust options, went from strength to strength and now they’re reaching further into the Japanese-marques’ model line-up with the Juke.

The development of the Juke performance exhaust system is being carried out in conjunction with legendary Japanese tuner and GT-R specialist Litchfield Imports.

Milltek currently has Litchfield’s 1.6 DIG-T Tekna model in its UK development facility and has already begun work on giving the Juke’s 188bhp turbo-charged engine a power boost, sharper throttle response and, of course, endowing it with that split-personality sound quality that Milltek has become renowned for – that is - it will remain quiet when cruising and only release its full sporting voice under full acceleration – exactly when you want it.

Litchfield Imports has already released a number of other upgrades for the Juke, including an ECU remap, recirculating and dump valves and suspension enhancements.

We’ll have progress reports on the development of the exhaust system here very shortly…

Volkswagen Golf GTi Edition 35

Milltek Sport has a proud history of producing extremely successful special edition exhaust systems to coincide with the release of the official Volkswagen celebration models.

Back in 2002, Volkswagen released a limited edition version of the Mk4 Golf GTi, called the 337 Anniversary, to celebrate 25 years since the birth of the market-redefining hatch.

Among many standout features of the 337 Anniversary was the fitment of a single round exhaust tailpipe instead of the twin-outlet of the regular GTi model. After talking to some of the 337 Anniversary customers, Milltek quickly realised that it needed to produce a single-outlet version of its GTi exhaust system to help maintain the identity of the special model. A decision that proved extremely popular among owners of the 337 Anniversary.

Then, five years later in 2007, Volkswagen released the Edition 30 of the already acclaimed Mk5 Golf GTi, to mark 30 years since the Golf first hit the showrooms. The ED30 came with more power (30bhp more), a body kit, special alloy wheels and some interior styling nods to the original Mk1 GTi – such as the golf ball-style gear knob. Milltek understood that owners of special-edition vehicles would rightly like their cars to stand out from the crowd, so they launched a special edition of their Mk5 GTi exhaust which featured unique dual-skin tailpipes.

Fast-forward a further five years and Volkswagen released the 35th Annivesary edition of their Mk6 GTi. As with the Edition 30, the Edition 35 features more power (25bhp) and a smattering of cosmetic tweaks.

Milltek’s Mk6 GTi exhaust system has become the benchmark system throughout the World and they will be launching a very special version specifically for owners of the Edition 35. We’ll have more details on this very shortly…

Milltek Tom Onslow-Cole Race Report. Round 3: Thruxton

TOC: Well.. that can only be described as a very difficult weekend, really! The conditions were truly terrible for most of our time on track and I can only really describe it as akin to being strapped to a mechanical bull! The RWD set-up of the Ebay Motors BMW is stunning in the dry, but it can be a real handful in standing water. Whereas the FWD cars can power through any little squirms and shakes as aquaplaning starts, we have to back off to get the car in line. All those little lifts really start to add up around each lap and cost precious time.

Qualifying looked great to begin with. At the beginning, it was a dry session, so we took the opportunity to run the car on slicks for the first time. We had technical issues with one of the hubs during practise, meaning that it was literally the first time that I had driven the car on that set-up, but it felt great straight away, and I concentrated on getting a few solid laps in. With a few tweeks throughout the session, we posted 10th on the grid for the first race.

Race One was the start of what was to be rather a lot of wet racing! I got a pretty decent start and was happily working my way through the ranks as the rain was getting heavier and heavier. It was quite a fight, so when the race was red-flagged after 14 laps, with me at 8th.. I was happy enough at that!!

Race Two was in a similarly damp vain.. With so much standing water on the track at this time, visibility was proving to be the biggest issue. You literally couldn’t see the rain lights of the car that was six inches in front of you. It also meant that you couldn’t see the puddles, either, which meant for ‘interesting’ progress around certain parts of the circuit. I made a good start in this race, but was suffering a little bit with tyre performance towards the end, which meant I had to settle for 13th in the end.

Race Three was a little better. It was still wet, but made a useful start and just plugged away throughout, to end up in 10th. I was quite relieved to get out of the car at the end of it all, to be honest! It was quite a weekend.

We’ve got quite a lot to examine after this round. Things we could have done differently, what I could have done as a driver… The team have created a superb wet weather set-up, so I can’t really fault them in any way, but we need to look at tyre life, and seeing how we can get our ‘little’ 17s to last as well as the 18s on the NGTC cars. A few more testing sessions needed, I think!

Catch Tom and his Ebay Motors BMW in action in the next round at Oulton Park on the 9th and 10th of June.

2012 VAG Trophy prepares for take off

This weekend sees the VAG Trophy begin its fourth consecutive season, when rounds one and two take place at Donington Park on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th April.

The 2012 championship, organised and administered by MSVR, features five race weekends, each of them double-headers and therefore hosting two rounds per meeting as follows:

Rounds 1 & 2 April 28/29 - Donington Park

Rounds 3 & 4 May 12/13 - Silverstone National

Rounds 5 & 6 July 21 - Oulton Park

Rounds 7 & 8 September - 15/16 Brands Hatch GP

Rounds 9 & 10 October - 27/28 Snetterton 300

As in previous years, the championship is open to a range of VAG models using a floor pan that was in production before 2006. The cars are then split into two classes defined by a carefully structured power-to-weight ratio - for both turbocharged and non-turbocharged engines – to ensure close racing. Eligible vehicles are:

VW: Golf, Vento, Polo, Scirocco, Corrado, Passat, Beetle
Seat: Leon, Ibiza
Skoda: Octavia, Fabia
Audi: 80, A3, A4

"We are delighted to be supporting the VAG Trophy for a third season", said SuperPro General Manager Richard Fearn. "Our wide range of suspension products includes applications for the vast majority of VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda cars. Therefore, this is an ideal championship for us, as it highlights the performance benefits of our products and helps promote them to VAG car owners, trade outlets and race teams."

New for 2012 is television coverage on Motors TV, together with an increased PR profile. Also for this year, championship officials have simplified the regulations and introduced measures to ensure fair play, such as data-logging, to accurately evaluate horsepower-per-tonne figures and monitor power outputs. In addition, the allocation of success ballast has been brought in to maintain a balance of performance throughout the season.

Also new for this year is the introduction of the Mk4 Golf TDIGTI Challenge: a one-make series that will run within the VAG Trophy. With a limited amount of modifications permitted and subsequently low build costs, organisers anticipate this category will grow as the season progresses.

So far championship organisers are delighted to confirm that over 40 registrations have already been received, with a grid of 30 cars expected to line up for the first race this weekend. Returning to defend their titles are winners in 2010 and 2011 Mark Jenkins and Dan Rose, who are again tipped as front-runners.

Notable additions to the entry list will be Mark Jenkins’ brother Dave, the reigning BTRA (British Truck Racing Association) Champion driving a Mk4 Golf TDi. Also joining the grid will be ex-Production Touring Car driver Liam McMillan in a Seat Leon, as well as James Bradley-Silverstone from Chesterfield VAG tuners (and Milltek Sport dealer) JBS Auto Designs driving a Beetle RSi.

"It's great to see a mixture of our regular competitors, former winners and new faces in the line-up this season", said Championship Coordinator John Hillon. "I am sure that the TV coverage, increased profile and simplified regulations that create a more level playing field has attracted drivers this year and it’s shaping up to be the best season ever."

Sharing the meeting - and the 10-race calendar - with the VAG Trophy will be popular Mk2 Golf GTI Championship.

Round one of this year's VAG Trophy will get the green light at 14.25 on Saturday, with round two scheduled to start at 12.20 on Sunday.

UPDATED: Porsche Panamera Turbo and Turbo S Performance Exhaust System

Milltek is proud to announce the release of its latest metallurgic masterpiece; a hand-finished stainless steel exhaust system for Porsche’s ultimate GT, the Panamera Turbo and Turbo S.

Milltek has taken great care to maintain the dual personality that Porsche has carefully engineered into the car, and has exploited the latest construction and material techniques to endow the car with the best of both worlds; a relaxed and refined demeanour for motorway cruising, balanced with a superbly sporty growl under load and when driving hard.

The car feels night and day different with the Milltek fitted

This is achieved with the use of several OEM-level engineering solutions. The system itself is based around the very highest quality non-magnetic stainless steel and uses a consistent 70mm bore and CNC mandrel bends for optimum flow. The Milltek system bolts directly to the factory catalysts and deletes the centre silencers to maximise gas flow. During testing, this design was found to reduce back pressure from 250 millibars to just 60. Custom-formed endplates and teardrop-section silencers at the rear of the vehicle then enhance the harmonics of the system to give simply glorious acoustics – when required, of course.

A perfect euro style V8 roar on start up and wide open throttle

The use of precision engineered ‘active exhaust valves’ is the real secret to the Milltek’s ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ persona. Cruising off the throttle sees the valves shut, resulting in factory noise levels, a total lack of cabin resonance and a truly cosseting driving experience. However, should the mood take you to drive a little more ‘enthusiastically’, the valves will open accordingly, allowing the Panamera to breathe more freely and giving the engine note a divine V8 bellow that reflects its true heritage.

Love the exhaust, amazing sound!

Two versions are available and both fit both the Turbo and Turbo S variants of the Panamera. The ‘Cup’ system offers the ultimate GT experience and maximum performance, whilst the forthcoming ‘Euro’ system will be fully homologated and appropriately accredited. Both offer the ability to handle a proven 700bhp with ease.

As ever, aesthetics have been a major factor in Milltek’s design process, so choose from 100mm ‘GT’ trim tips in Ink Black, mirror polished or Titanium. The trims were carefully designed to fit precisely into the factory bumper apertures, offering a subtle increase in visual aggression, without looking overly modified. In all cases, every system has been conceived, developed and engineered here in the UK.

Milltek Tom Onslow-Cole Race Report. Round 2: Donington Park

TOC: Donington is definitely one of my favourite tracks and my real hope as we went into qualifying was that we could build on the solid start at Brands and try and rack up a few more points. Early pace in the session seemed really good. It was raining quite a bit, which can make the RWD BMW a bit lively, but nothing that couldn’t be dealt with.

Race one felt very hooked up all the way through. I got a good start and got up from 12th to 5th, and it was good to see that the BMW has the pace of the rest of the pack. 5th meant we had tallied some useful points and I was hopeful for race two.

To begin with, the car felt really positive in race two. WSR really have done a great job of prepping it and it’s really coming to me now as a package. With qually being so wet, we hadn’t had time to heat cycle all of our race tyres properly, so we were all a little apprehensive as to whether the set we had fitted, which were literally a ‘sticker set’ prior to the lights going out, would be able to handle the race temps after not being graded properly. Unfortunately, they didn’t. Certain parts of the track that I was able to take flat in race one were needing a slight lifts in race two – and it cost me all around the circuit, making for a 10th as the flag dropped. Mind you, before they ‘went off’ they were good enough for a fastest lap, so it balances out!

I felt really good about Race three. The start hooked up perfectly and I thought that I could fight my way through lap by lap. Mid way through, I saw that Rob had gone wide, so I backed off to give him room, which caught Matt out and had me punted off and ‘rallying’ on the grass. I gathered that all up neatly enough, and got straight back to work, but I had lost quite a few places and suffered significant aero damage, meaning a 9th was the best I could manage, having to fight the car a little more than usual.

Summing up, it was a great round. It puts me at 47 points in the Driver’s Championship, which is level with Dave Newsham, 9th overall and 5th in the Indy standings. As a team we’re also third in both leagues, so we’re all hugely positive. If we can turn a few of those fastest laps into track positions, Thruxton should be even more fun! We’re really going to work on the set-up for that round. It’s such a fast, sweeping circuit I think we can do well there.

Catch Tom at Thruxton in his eBay Motors BMW on the 29th April and don’t forget to check out his site.

Milltek's performance exhaust options for the Skoda Fabia vRS 1.4 TSi 180bhp

Respected exhaust manufacturer Milltek Sport has released a superb new turbo back exhaust system for all models of the 1.4 TSi Skoda Fabia vRS. Made here in the UK, each system offers fabulous looks combined with significant performance gains.

Entirely hand-finished from aerospace grade, non-magnetic T304 stainless steel, the Milltek Sport system is light, beautifully made and outperforms the factory system in every possible way. Each of the bends has been mandrel-bent by Milltek's time-served craftsmen, using the latest CNC technology balanced with traditional finishing techniques to ensure great flow, combined with exceptional looks. With technology gleaned from the firm's extensive involvement in BTCC and Time Attack, this new vRS system offers genuine racecar levels of fit and finish, within the grasp of the true enthusiast.

As well as significant breathing improvements, Milltek's engineers have managed to pare down the weight of the new system over its OE counterpart, thanks to the use of high quality materials. This helps to reduce mass on the car, as well as significantly improving drivability, power and torque - particularly in the all-important mid-range.

The stunning pipework is 70mm (2.75 inch) for the optimum balance of gasflow and back pressure, with precision jigging and mandrel bending ensuring an even curvature through each bend. This attractive exhaust is finished off with two 80mm GT80 trims for the ultimate 'OEM+' demeanor.

As a full 'turbo back' system, this part not only improves performance considerably, but also endows the recipient vehicle with a superbly sonorous soundtrack, balancing a sporty note with great cabin acoustics.

The Milltek Sport Skoda Fabia vRS System is available through all Milltek approved dealers.
