The concept of Supermono racing started life twenty five years ago. It has evolved from a series with predominantly classic machines, to a grid containing state of the art race bikes. The turning point for the championship was in the early nineties when three specialist frame builders, Harris, Tigcraft and Hejira all decided to raise the profile and technical ambitions of single cylinder racing. The series was re-branded as the HTH Sound of the Singles championship, and the foundation was laid for the championship we have today. In the coming years we would see works Yamaha's from Japan and Italy. Ducati manufactured the beautiful Supermono race bike of which the 916 world superbike was based on, and only a few dozen where built, (most now in collections). Hejira designed and built the first fully productioned Carbon-fibre frame and swing-arm, Suzuki, KTM, Husaberg, BMW, and Honda have all produced at one time or another a works suported supermono race machine.

The rules are quite simple, four-stroke single cylinder machines, compromising one piston, one crank and one barrell. The maximum cubic capacity is 800 and the minimum weight limit 95kg. No turbos or supercharges allowed. So as you can see, there is a lot of scope for design and innovation within the rules.

Today's grid is still brimmed with the latest in design and technology. The European championship winning bike from last year is a GRC/Pami BMW, 80+BHP and only 120kg. On the other end of the scale you have the Tigcraft minimono, this machine is a 125cc sized chassis, with a 50+BHP tuned motocross engine and weighing in on the limit of 95kg. But with incredible corner speed it's more than a match for the bigger machines.
